World Environment Day 2024
World Environment Day started in 1972 and is celebrated annually each June.
This day brings together millions of people from across the globe, to inspire positive change and grow a sense of responsibility towards our natural surroundings.
As a drinking water-only company, we work hard to protect our valuable water sources. With 2.3 million customers and the increasing pressure of climate change, even just the smallest changes we make to our day-to-day lives and how we use water will make a big difference.
Did you know…
- We supply 530 million litres of water a day to around 2.3 million people.
- Around 500,000 water quality tests are taken each year to ensure your drinking water meets the highest standards.
- There are 9,000 miles of South East Water water mains to transfer fresh drinking water from out treatment works, directly to your tap.
Protecting the environment is at the heart of what we do.From working with farmers to improve the quality of our water at the source, protecting our rivers and chalk aquifers and our dedicated biodiversity enhancement programs, our teams work hard to protect and enhance the environment for future generations.
This is proven from the work we do with our farmers, boosting biodiversity(opens in a new tab), and protecting rivers to being the first UK water company to implement a 25-year environment plan (H25).(opens in a new tab)
H25 focuses on four key areas:
💧 Safe water - futureproofing water for the environment and next-generation.
🌱 Climate change - building an environment that adapts to a changing climate.
💙 Sustainability - protecting and enhancing our natural environment.
🤝 Partnerships - working collaboratively to keep rivers and underground water sources healthy.
We have already seen significant changes to our climate, from extreme weather conditions to rapidly changing seasons. Comparing this year’s current temperatures to last year, they are far from similar. This is why it is so important to adapt to our forever changing climate, and make sure we can save water where we can.
Here (opens in a new tab)you can find lots of ways that you can save water inside and outside your home. Together, we can create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for future generations.
