Sussex cancer charities benefit as Community Chest spills it's gold

Children with Cancer Fund and the WOLO Foundation are two of ten good causes across the south east which are sharing a £20,000 bounty thanks to South East Water’s Community Chest Fund.

This year over 100 applications from charitable organisations were received and the decision on where to place the money was taken by a panel of eight South East Water employees from all parts of the business, but all with an interest in raising money for good causes.

A grant of £2,000, was awarded to Children with Cancer Fund to help support families spend valuable time together while their child is undergoing treatment. The WOLO Foundation was also awarded £2,000 from the Community Chest Fund to support its Communi-TEA meet ups, which provide a welcome and supportive space for families affected by cancer to come together, connect, and reduce feelings of isolation.

Tanya Sephton, Customer Services Director, South East Water said: “It is estimated that there are almost 3.5 million people living with cancer in the UK and one in two people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime.

“Awarding this funding to these incredible charities will provide much needed support to families living across Sussex. It will support the physical, emotional and social wellbeing needs of families at such a difficult time for them and will increase the experiences available to the children.”

Chris Downton, Co-founder of Children with Cancer Fund, said: ”Wow what can I say. Thank you is so easy, but when you realise the number of families who will benefit from this grant you will understand what a difference this donation from South East Water’s Community Chest Fund will make.

“It will enable families to spend quality time together whilst their child is undergoing treatment, which means smiling faces from the children and support for the adults from someone who understands the situation.”

Fler Wright, Co-founder at WOLO said: “We are so grateful to South East Water for its generous support of our Communi-TEA events. This funding will ensure we can continue bringing families together at an incredibly difficult time in their lives, when they are facing the challenges of cancer and often feeling isolated.

“These events provide a much needed space for connection, understanding and support, helping families feel less alone. Thanks to this funding, we can continue to offer places where people can share their experiences, find comfort and build friendships that make a real difference to their well-being.”
